Bicycle Care & Maintenance

Complete guide to proper bicycle care and maintenance for different types of bikes

A practical and detailed guide on how to take care of city bikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, children’s bikes, and cargo bikes throughout the year.

Why regular bicycle maintenance matters

This bicycle maintenance guide explains how to take care of city bikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, children’s bikes and cargo bikes throughout the year.

A properly maintained bicycle lasts longer, feels safer, and costs less to own over time. Many expensive repairs begin as small problems: a dry chain, weak braking, low tyre pressure, or gears that no longer shift smoothly.

Good bicycle care does not need to be complicated. It is mainly about simple habits: keep the bike clean, use the correct tyre pressure, lubricate the chain, check the brakes, and book service before small problems become major repairs.

A well-maintained bicycle rolls more easily, brakes more safely, and feels more reliable every day.

Basic maintenance for all bicycles

Check the tyres regularly

Low tyre pressure makes the bicycle harder to ride, increases the risk of punctures, and wears out tyres faster. Check the pressure at least every two weeks if you ride often. The recommended pressure is usually printed on the side of the tyre.

Keep the chain clean and lubricated

The chain is one of the most important wear parts on a bicycle. A dry or dirty chain quickly wears down the chainrings, cassette, and shifting system. Wipe the chain with a cloth, apply suitable chain oil, and remove excess oil afterwards.

Check the brakes

Brakes should feel firm, even, and responsive. If the brake lever moves too close to the handlebar, if the brake rubs, squeals heavily, or feels weak, it should be adjusted. Rim brakes need clean rims and fresh brake pads. Disc brakes need clean rotors and correctly aligned pads.

Inspect the gears

Gears that skip, make noise, or fail to shift properly indicate that the cable, chain, or derailleur adjustment may need attention. Riding too long with poorly adjusted gears can damage both the chain and drivetrain.

Tighten loose parts

Regularly check the handlebar, saddle, pedals, wheel nuts, mudguards, rack, kickstand, and accessories. Normal riding vibration can loosen bolts over time.

Maintenance by bicycle type

City bike

City bikes are often used all year and exposed to rain, salt, dirt, and frequent stops. Check the chain, brakes, tyres, lights, and mudguards regularly. Hub gears and coaster brakes require less daily attention but still need periodic service.

E-bike

E-bikes are heavier and place more load on the drivetrain. Check brakes and tyres carefully. The battery should be stored dry, protected from extreme cold, and not left completely discharged for long periods.

Mountain bike

Mountain bikes are exposed to mud, impacts, and heavy loads. Clean the bike after dirty rides and check tyres, brakes, suspension, chain, and wheels. Avoid directing high-pressure water at bearings and suspension parts.

Road bike

Road bikes require correct tyre pressure, a clean drivetrain, and precise gear adjustment. Check the tyres often because narrow tyres are more sensitive to cuts, glass, and small cracks.

Children’s bike

Children’s bikes should be checked frequently because they are often used hard, dropped, or left outside. Check brakes, tyres, chain guard, saddle height, handlebar, lights, and reflectors.

Cargo bike

Cargo bikes carry more weight and require strong brakes, correct tyre pressure, and regular inspection of wheels, spokes, frame, kickstand, steering, and load-carrying parts.

Seasonal bicycle care

Spring

After winter, the bicycle should be cleaned thoroughly. Check the chain, brakes, tyres, gears, lights, and all bolts. Salt and moisture may have affected metal parts, cables, and bearings.

Summer

In summer, many riders cycle longer distances. Check tyre pressure, lubricate the chain, and make sure the tyres do not have cracks. A smooth-running bike makes a big difference on longer rides.

Autumn

Rain, leaves, and darkness make autumn demanding. Check brakes, lights, reflectors, and tyre tread. A clean chain and working lights are especially important.

Winter

Winter cycling is hard on bicycles. Road salt, moisture, and cold can cause rust and stiff cables. Rinse the bike regularly, use suitable chain lubricant, and consider winter tyres for slippery conditions.

Quick bicycle maintenance checklist

  • Check tyre pressure.
  • Look for cracks, glass, or damage in the tyres.
  • Test front and rear brakes.
  • Check that the chain is not dry or rusty.
  • Listen for unusual noises while riding.
  • Make sure the gears shift smoothly.
  • Check lights and reflectors.
  • Tighten loose bolts and accessories.
  • Check saddle and handlebar position.
  • Book service at least once per year.

When should you book a professional bicycle service?

You should book service if the brakes feel weak, the gears skip, the wheel is not straight, the chain is badly worn, you hear cracking sounds from the bottom bracket or hubs, or the bicycle feels unstable.

For everyday bicycles, at least one service per year is normally recommended. E-bikes, cargo bikes, and bicycles used all year may need service more often.

Proper bicycle care saves money, improves safety, and makes every ride better.
